A chatbot and an AI assistant can both talk to visitors, but they solve different problems. A chatbot follows predetermined paths. An AI assistant can use context, approved knowledge, and connected tools to help with a wider set of requests and defined actions.

The practical difference

A rule-based chatbot is best for a short, predictable menu of replies. It is useful for a small FAQ or a simple routing task. It does not reliably reason across an unfamiliar question or choose the next step from a broader context.

Conversation versus action

An AI assistant can hold context across follow-up questions and, when connected safely, take workflow actions such as collecting a lead, checking availability, creating a CRM record, or sending a request for human review. Tool access should always be limited to the job it needs to do.

Integrations, memory, and escalation

Chatbots usually rely on a fixed decision tree. Assistants can connect to a knowledge base and business tools, retain relevant session context, and escalate to a person when the request is sensitive, uncertain, or outside the agreed workflow.

Limitations to plan for

Neither option replaces judgment everywhere. Chatbots become brittle when the decision tree grows too large. Assistants need accurate source material, testing, permissions, and clear boundaries so they do not guess or act beyond their remit.

Which should you choose?

Choose a chatbot for a small, stable set of questions with one predictable response path. Choose an AI assistant when the task involves nuanced questions, connected information, controlled workflow steps, or a human handoff.

The decision should follow the customer journey and the risk of the task, not the novelty of the technology. Start with the narrowest useful scope, then expand only after the assistant is reliable.
